Car Carrier vs. Car Shipping Broker

A car carrier owns the truck and trailer and physically moves your vehicle. A car shipping broker is licensed by the FMCSA to arrange that move: it quotes your shipment, finds a carrier with space on your route and dates, and manages the booking until delivery.

Most carriers run a handful of regular lanes, so no single car hauler covers every route in the country. Working through a broker gives you access to many carrier companies with one quote. ShipMyCar US is a broker, and the six carriers in the network section above are part of the network we dispatch to.

How We Vet Car Carrier Companies

Active Operating Authority

The carrier must hold an active USDOT number and, for interstate hauling, active MC operating authority on the FMCSA register.

Liability & Cargo Insurance

We confirm the carrier carries federally required liability insurance and active cargo insurance before assigning a vehicle.

Safety Record

FMCSA safety ratings and CSA scores are reviewed before dispatch, not just at onboarding.

Right Equipment for the Load

Open, enclosed, winch-equipped, or oversize — the carrier’s trailer has to match your vehicle and service type.

Bill of Lading Inspections

Every driver documents vehicle condition at pickup and delivery on a signed Bill of Lading.

One Point of Contact

You deal with a ShipMyCar US coordinator from quote to delivery, whichever carrier hauls your vehicle.

How to Check Any Car Hauler Yourself

01

Get the USDOT or MC number

Any legitimate car hauler will give you its USDOT and MC numbers. They also appear on the truck door and the Bill of Lading.

02

Look it up on FMCSA SAFER

Search the number in the FMCSA Company Snapshot. The legal name should match the company you were given.

03

Check authority status

Operating status should read “Authorized” for property. “Not Authorized” or “Out of Service” means the carrier cannot legally haul interstate.

04

Ask for a certificate of insurance

Request the carrier’s current certificate and confirm the cargo limit covers your vehicle’s value.

FAQ

Auto Transport Carriers — Frequently Asked Questions

How car carriers, brokers, and carrier vetting work at ShipMyCar US.

QWhat is an auto transport carrier?

An auto transport carrier is the trucking company that physically hauls your vehicle on its own truck and trailer. Carriers hold their own USDOT number and MC operating authority from the FMCSA, and range from owner-operators with a single truck to fleets with dozens of car haulers.

QWhat is the difference between a car carrier and a car shipping broker?

A carrier owns the trucks and moves the vehicle. A broker, like ShipMyCar US, is licensed by the FMCSA to arrange transport: it prices your shipment, matches it to a vetted carrier with space on your route, and manages the booking through delivery. Most car shipments in the U.S. are arranged through brokers because one carrier rarely covers every route.

QCan I book one of these carriers directly?

You book through ShipMyCar US. We match your route, vehicle, and dates to an available carrier in our network — which may be one of the carriers listed here — and handle dispatch, paperwork, and insurance verification.

QHow do I know a car hauler is legitimate?

Look up its USDOT or MC number on the FMCSA SAFER website, confirm the operating status is “Authorized”, and ask for a current certificate of insurance. Be wary of any company that will not give you its numbers or asks for full payment before a carrier is assigned.

QDo car carriers have insurance?

Interstate carriers must carry federally required liability insurance. Every carrier in the ShipMyCar US network must also hold active cargo insurance, which covers damage the carrier causes to your vehicle during transport, and we verify it before dispatch.
