Military Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves create vehicle shipping challenges that civilians rarely encounter. Orders can change with little notice. Deployment timelines shift. New duty station housing is not always available on the date you expect. And the entire move often happens under significant personal and logistical stress that leaves little time to manage a vehicle shipping relationship that requires constant hand-holding.

ShipMyCar US has developed military car shipping protocols specifically for the PCS environment. We offer flexible rescheduling without standard cancellation penalties when orders change, base delivery coordination for military installations nationwide, and a team that understands the paperwork, timeline, and logistical context of a PCS move. We serve service members from all branches — Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard — across every US military installation.

The Unique Challenges of PCS Vehicle Shipping

A standard consumer vehicle shipping booking assumes a stable origin, a stable destination, and a fixed timeline. PCS moves rarely offer any of those three certainties.

Orders change: Deployment dates shift, new orders arrive, duty station assignments are amended. A vehicle shipping booking made in good faith can be completely invalidated by a single set of new orders. Standard broker cancellation policies penalize customers for these unavoidable changes.

Base access logistics: Not every carrier can access a military installation. Some bases require background checks, vehicle registration on file, or advance security coordination for commercial vehicle access. Knowing which installations require what, and coordinating accordingly, requires experience with military base protocols.

Split household goods: Military families often have their household goods (HHG) moving under government shipment while managing personal vehicle transport independently. Coordinating two parallel moves with different logistics providers and different timelines is complicated.

Timeline uncertainty: Government housing (BAH allocation, on-base housing availability) does not always align with the official PCS date. Service members often need vehicle delivery to hold until their housing situation is confirmed — a 'flexible delivery' requirement that standard auto transport bookings do not accommodate.

ShipMyCar US military car shipping addresses each of these challenges with policy flexibility and experienced coordination.

How Military Car Shipping Works with ShipMyCar US

01

Provide Your PCS Orders and Installation Details

When booking military car transport, share your PCS orders (the specific duty station, reporting date, and any applicable DLA information) along with your origin and destination addresses. If you are delivering to an on-base address, provide the installation name, gate designation, and any base access requirements you are aware of. This information allows our team to coordinate carrier base access in advance.

02

Flexible Booking With Rescheduling Policy

Military bookings at ShipMyCar US are created with rescheduling flexibility built in. Orders change — that is a reality of service life. We do not apply standard civilian cancellation penalties to military customers who need to reschedule due to order amendments, deployment changes, or housing delays. Notify us as early as possible with updated orders and we coordinate the adjustment.

03

Carrier Assignment with Base Access Pre-Coordination

Once your booking is confirmed, our dispatch team identifies carriers with documented experience delivering to military installations. For installations with specific access requirements — pre-registration, background check coordination, or escort needs — our team initiates that coordination before your carrier is finalized. This prevents day-of access complications that delay delivery.

04

Standard Pickup and Condition Inspection

Military vehicle transport pickups follow the same Bill of Lading condition inspection process as civilian transport. Your vehicle is photographed, condition is documented, and you sign the pickup report. Prepare your vehicle per standard protocol — one-quarter fuel, no personal items, disabled alarms, photographs taken independently. Military-specific preparation note: remove any weapons, classified materials, or government property from the vehicle before pickup.

05

On-Base Delivery Coordination

For on-base deliveries, your carrier coordinates gate access with the installation's visitor control center or commercial vehicle processing point. Some installations require the carrier's DOT number to be pre-registered. Others require a military sponsor (you) to escort the commercial vehicle on base. Our team advises on the specific procedure for your destination installation so you are not surprised on delivery day.

Military Car Shipping Cost and Reimbursement

Military car shipping rates are based on the same route, vehicle size, and service type variables as civilian transport. ShipMyCar US does not charge a military surcharge — service members pay the same rates as civilian customers on the same routes.

Typical military PCS shipping costs: - East Coast installations (NC, VA, SC, GA) to West Coast: $900–$1,500 open transport - Midwest to South (KY, IN to FL, TX, GA): $600–$1,000 open transport - Texas to California (common inter-installation corridor): $900–$1,400 open transport - Hawaii origin or destination: Requires special freight routing — contact us for Hawaii military transport pricing

Dislocation Allowance (DLA): For domestic CONUS PCS moves, service members receive Dislocation Allowance — a flat allowance based on pay grade and dependency status, not reimbursement for specific expenses. DLA can be applied toward vehicle shipping costs at the service member's discretion. The allowance is typically not sufficient to cover all moving costs, but it provides meaningful partial coverage.

Government-paid vehicle transport: The government provides one vehicle shipment for certain PCS moves — typically those involving extended overseas assignments. For domestic CONUS-to-CONUS moves, vehicle shipping is generally a personal expense. Check with your installation transportation office (ITO or TMO) for your specific entitlements under your current orders.

POV shipment through government program: Some service members qualify for POV (privately owned vehicle) shipment through the government's contracted carriers at no personal cost. This program has specific eligibility requirements, booking windows, and vehicle condition requirements — your installation's transportation officer manages this process. ShipMyCar US is an independent commercial carrier and does not process government-contract POV shipments.

PCS Auto Transport Checklist — Step-by-Step for Service Members

01

Receive and Review Your PCS Orders

As soon as your PCS orders arrive, note the reporting date, new duty station address, and any authorized delay provisions. The reporting date is your hard deadline — work backward from it to establish the latest date your vehicle must be delivered to your new duty station or housing address. Identify whether your orders include any government-provided vehicle shipment entitlement (check with your installation TMO/ITO before booking commercial transport).

02

Determine Your Vehicle Shipping Entitlements

Visit your installation's Transportation Management Office (TMO) or Installation Transportation Officer (ITO) to confirm whether your specific PCS orders authorize government-funded POV (privately owned vehicle) shipment. For most domestic CONUS-to-CONUS moves, government-paid vehicle shipping is not provided. For OCONUS assignments, entitlements differ. Knowing your entitlements before booking commercial transport ensures you don't pay for what the government covers — or miss the commercial booking window waiting for confirmation.

03

Get Your Commercial Auto Transport Quote

Once you have confirmed that commercial transport is needed, request a quote from ShipMyCar US with your pickup address, destination duty station or housing address, vehicle details, and target pickup date range. Military customers should mention their PCS status at the time of quoting — our team applies the appropriate rescheduling policy to your booking from the start and advises on whether your reporting date requires expedited service given the transit time for your specific route.

04

Book With Rescheduling Provision in Place

When you confirm your ShipMyCar US booking, have your current PCS orders documentation available. Military customers receive rescheduling flexibility that standard civilian bookings do not include — confirmed in writing with your booking. Notify ShipMyCar US immediately if your orders change after booking. The earlier we receive amended orders relative to your carrier assignment date, the more flexibility we have to adjust without additional cost to you.

05

Prepare Your Vehicle for PCS Pickup

Military-specific vehicle preparation includes standard transport prep (one-quarter fuel, photos from all angles, personal items removed, alarm disabled) plus critical additions: remove all weapons, ammunition, explosive materials, and government property from the vehicle. Remove CAC cards, military identification, classified documents, and any sensitive materials. Remove base stickers if your vehicle is being delivered to a different branch installation where those stickers may complicate access. Leave registration and insurance documents in the vehicle or provide copies to the carrier.

06

Coordinate On-Base Delivery in Advance

If your vehicle is being delivered to an on-base address — barracks, family housing, or an on-post storage facility — contact the installation's Visitor Control Center (VCC) or Provost Marshal Office in advance to understand commercial vehicle delivery procedures. Some installations require the carrier's DOT number to be registered 24–48 hours before arrival. Others require a military escort from the main gate. Providing this coordination information to ShipMyCar US before your carrier departs ensures the delivery does not face access denial on arrival day.

07

Complete Final Inspection and Take Possession

At delivery, inspect your vehicle thoroughly against the pickup Bill of Lading before signing the delivery report. Check all panels, wheels, windows, and any accessories that were present at pickup. If you observe any damage that was not present at pickup, note it on the delivery document and do not sign a clean receipt. Contact ShipMyCar US immediately to initiate the cargo insurance claim process. Once signed clean, the delivery is complete and the vehicle is fully transferred to your possession.

Vehicle Types for Military PCS Shipping

Military families ship a wide range of vehicle types during PCS moves, and ShipMyCar US accommodates each with appropriate carrier matching and equipment.

Standard passenger vehicles: Sedans, SUVs, crossovers, and minivans are the most common PCS vehicle type. These ship via standard open or enclosed transport based on the owner's preference and vehicle value. Most military families shipping a standard daily driver choose open transport for its cost effectiveness and availability.

Pickup trucks: Full-size and mid-size pickup trucks — F-150, RAM 1500, Chevy Silverado, Tacoma — are the most common vehicle type among Army and Marine Corps service members. Standard open carriers accommodate all production pickup trucks. Extended cab long-bed configurations may have dimensional considerations — confirm at booking.

Performance and luxury vehicles: Service members who own high-performance or luxury vehicles — Corvettes, Mustangs, BMWs, Mercedes — often choose enclosed transport for PCS moves, particularly for cross-country routes where the open-road exposure concern is greatest. Enclosed PCS transport is available on all routes at the standard enclosed premium.

Second vehicles and motorcycles: Many military families ship a second vehicle to the new duty station while driving the primary vehicle during the PCS road trip. Motorcycles are common second vehicles — these require specific enclosed or flatbed motorcycle transport and are booked as separate loads. Provide the motorcycle's year, make, model, and running condition at booking.

Non-running vehicles: Inoperable vehicles during PCS moves — whether due to mechanical failure, an in-progress restoration, or a recently purchased project car — ship with the standard non-running surcharge applied to the military transport rate. Full winch and fork-plate equipment availability applies to military inoperable vehicle transport on all domestic routes.
