The Minneapolis-to-Florida and Minneapolis-to-Arizona routes are among the most competitive for carrier availability in the entire country during October and November. If you plan to leave after Thanksgiving, book in September. If you plan to leave in October, book in August. Waiting until two weeks before your departure date during peak snowbird season almost always results in delayed pickups and higher rates.

Minnesota winters are severe and unpredictable. When scheduling a winter pickup, have your vehicle accessible (not buried in a snowbank), cleared of snow, and ensure the carrier can reach your driveway or parking space. Remote rural addresses in winter may require terminal pickup at a nearby location.

If you are shipping your vehicle south for the winter and it will sit for months in a warm climate, consider a pre-shipping inspection — particularly for batteries and fluids — before departure.

The Bill of Lading (BOL) is the legal record of your vehicle's condition before and after transport. At pickup, you and the driver document all existing damage. At delivery, the same inspection confirms condition. Any damage noted at delivery that was not on the pre-transport BOL is the carrier's liability and triggers an insurance claim. Always complete a thorough inspection at both ends — do not sign an incomplete or blank BOL.

Physical damage to your vehicle caused by transport — collision, loading/unloading accidents, weather damage (on enclosed carriers), and tie-down strap damage. It covers the vehicle itself, not contents.

Personal belongings inside the vehicle (remove everything before pickup), pre-existing mechanical failures unrelated to transport, cosmetic damage below the deductible threshold, and vehicles misrepresented as operational when they are not.

Document damage on the BOL at delivery before signing. Photograph all damage immediately. Contact ShipMyCar US the same day — do not wait. We initiate the carrier insurance claim on your behalf and provide documentation support throughout the resolution process.

Check your personal auto insurance policy's comprehensive section — some policies extend coverage during transport. Your agent can confirm whether your existing policy supplements the carrier's cargo policy during transit to or from Minnesota.

Wash your vehicle 24–48 hours before pickup to create a clean, photographable baseline. Photograph all four sides, both bumpers, the roof, door sills, and any pre-existing scratches, dings, or damage. Date-stamp the photos. These images are your evidence if any condition dispute arises at delivery.

Carrier cargo insurance does not cover personal belongings inside the vehicle. Remove everything from the cabin, trunk, glove box, center console, seat pockets, and under seats. Take out electronics, chargers, documents, car seats, spare clothes, cleaning products, and any valuables. Loose items shift during transport and can cause interior damage.

Leave no more than one-quarter tank of fuel (approximately 2–3 gallons). This reduces the vehicle's weight on the carrier and is standard industry protocol. Do not fill the tank before pickup.

Ensure your battery holds a full charge and all four tires are inflated to manufacturer specifications. Your vehicle must be able to drive onto and off the carrier under its own power. A dead battery at your Minnesota pickup location creates delays for both you and the driver.

If your car has an aftermarket alarm system, deactivate it before pickup. An alarm that cannot be silenced while the vehicle is on a carrier causes significant disruption for the driver and other vehicles on the load.

Retract power antennas. Remove or stow roof racks, bike carriers, ski boxes, and any accessories that add height or width beyond normal vehicle dimensions. Multi-level open carriers have limited clearance.

If your vehicle has an unusual starting procedure, a sensitive transmission, or any special requirements for safe operation, write these clearly on a piece of paper and hand it to your driver at pickup. The driver needs to safely operate your vehicle to load and unload it.
